Sonic 3 est un jeu de plates-formes sur Megadrive. Sonic et Tails doivent stopper le Dr. Robotnik qui compte bien reconstruire son Oeuf de la Mort. Il faudra récupérer tous les Chaos Emeralds au cours des six zones du jeu (chacune étant trois fois plus vaste que celles de l'opus précédent). Il s'agit toujours de traverser les niveaux à toute vitesse en ramassant un maximum d'anneaux mais un adversaire plus coriace va venir se frotter à nos héros : Knuckles.
